Born Robert Woods on August 6, 1970, in the house music mecca of Chicago, Robert Armani forged an uncompromising path in the underground electronic scene. His musical origins trace back to age 14, when he began DJing, quickly progressing to remixing by 18. It was in his own basement that the seeds of Armani's gritty, funk-fueled sound took root through raucous parties that achieved legendary status in his neighborhood.
Armani's raw, no-holds-barred approach struck a chord with partygoers and inspired future talents like DJ Rush and R&B superstar R. Kelly, who cut their teeth at these sweat-drenched gatherings. Though initially pursuing a career as a police officer, a pivotal gig in Italy made Armani realize music was his true calling. It was there that his penchant for designer fashion earned him the moniker "Armani" from adoring female fans.
Drawing influences from Chicago house pioneers like Armando, Mike Dunn and Frankie Knuckles, Armani's productions stick to the roots while constantly evolving, driven by pure creative impulse, or, as he puts it, "doing whatever comes to mind." This unrestrained ethos resonates through his prolific output on esteemed labels like Dance Mania, Pushpac Productions, ACV, Brooklyn Music Limited, High Octane Recordings and more.
Whether punishing the decks in his hometown or at international parties from Japan to Europe, Armani's frenetic DJ sets and hard-hitting techno productions have cemented his reputation as a uncompromising force. With a sound that is quintessentially Chicago - raw, funky and defiantly underground—Robert Armani continues to carry the torch for the city's iconic house music legacy.
